Whether you’re a professional with some film credits, a stage actor transitioning to film, or an experienced working actor at the Master level, Actors Breakthrough Weekend can be a personally affirming and career enhancing experience.
.I’m a working actor just like you. I’ve been around for a couple of decades and I’m still out there, working, auditioning, and, occasionally, wrestling with my own fear and self-doubt. I know what’s up in the actors head and heart. I also understand the kind of knowledge and skill it takes to make it in this business— I’ve been putting that knowledge and those skills to use successfully for twenty-five years. I do and I also, teach.
Over the course of two challenging and exciting days you and I will work intimately with a small group of committed actors at your level. We will engage in rigorous and extensive scene work. No theory. No esoteric exercises. Just practical, experienced-based coaching and critique. Solid, performance-based practice, shot on camera-- working toward the kind of honest portrayals careers are built on.
Of course, you’ll also be focused on the audition process. Maintaining successful auditioning skills is, probably, the professional actor’s most important skill set. Our focus, as actors, should not be on winning the role (there are far too many unknowable variables in the casting process for us to worry about that) but delivering the most honest and well prepared audition possible. Do this consistently and the roles will come.
You will also spend time examining many of the technical things film actors must know in order to work fast and effectively on the small or big budget film set. And, of course, I will also be sharing some practical and effective approaches to script analysis and character development.
During our time together, I will enthusiastically coach and critique you, one-on-one. I'll badger you, threaten you, and, if necessary, drag you kicking and screaming toward your "artistic and marketable best".
One week prior to your Actors Breakthrough Weekend you’ll begin receiving your scripts, sides and other workshop materials. This allows time for you to study and prepare your scenes; which means you’re not being critiqued and coached on cold reads but on, what you consider to be, your very best work. With your best work as our starting point, your potential for growth during the weekend is tremendous.
You will be performing challenging scenes from projects such as Babel, Crash, The Shawshank Redemption, The Woodsman, Millers Crossing, Kalifornia, Gangs of New York, Hotel Rwanda, American Beauty, Agnes of God, Girl Interrupted, Cold Mountain, Trainspotting, David Mamet’s masterpiece, Glengarry Glen Ross, and other outstanding films. Actors will also be working with several brand new, never before seen, TV scripts by writers like Ray Romano and Oscar Winner, Tom Schulman (Dead Poets Society). Scene-work will also include fresh film projects that are currently being cast in Los Angeles and New York . With such a small group of actors you won't be sitting and waiting for your time in front of the camera, you’ll be preparing with your scene partner or working under my direction.
Breakthrough Actors will also receive a solid week of recent NY/LA daily casting breakdowns. These Breakdowns give details about the hundreds of film and TV projects being cast and produced around the country; roles, character descriptions, the names of casting directors, producers, and directors on dozens of "current” film,TV, stage and commercial projects. If New York of Los Angeles is in your future, the Breakdowns will help you see how you fit into the Lead, Series Regular, and Strong supporting opportunities being cast daily.
The “Business of Acting” is another important area we’ll be getting into. They call it show business for a reason and we’ll be talking a lot about growing your career, building strong industry relationships, marketing, and the economic importance of diversifying your acting career to include, voiceover (in its many forms), industrial film, print, stage, and commercials.
Perhaps, most importantly, I want to help you understand the importance of staying emotionally, mentally, and spiritually fit, in an often brutal business—a business in which tenacity, endurance, and peace of mind, are key to a successful acting career.
When you register for the Early Professional or Masters Breakthrough Weekend, you'll be asked about your acting goals and about the skills you think you need to work on. This information enables me to tailor the weekend’s content to meet your individual needs. Matching actors according to skill, experience, and training is extremely important, so the more I know about you, professionally, the better.
Click on the pre-registration tab below and complete the brief information forms. If you’d like to register by phone, call 1 866 99ACTOR press 00. At the tone, leave us your name, address and phone number and we’ll get a pre-registration form right out to you.
See You Soon,
GregAlan
